How Freshers Can Save Tax on First Salary — New vs Old Regime (FY 2026-27)
TDS, 87A rebate, 80C, investment declaration — your payslip speaks a new language. Here's fresher tax explained in plain words, with the exact FY 2026-27 slabs and a simple regime decision.
💰 ₹12.75L zero tax⚖️ New vs old regime🧾 TDS explained📅 FY 2026-27 slabs
How can freshers save tax on their first salary in FY 2026-27? Most freshers automatically pay zero or very little tax under the new regime: salaried employees get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, and the Section 87A rebate makes tax nil on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh — so salary up to about ₹12.75 lakh is effectively tax-free. The old regime (80C, HRA, 80D) only wins if you have large deductions, which most freshers don't. Submit your investment declaration to HR, check your payslip TDS, and file your ITR by 31 July 2027.
🧾 First Payslip Shock — Where Did My Money Go?
Your offer said one number, your bank credit says another. The difference is deductions: EPF (12% of basic — your own savings), professional tax (around ₹200/month in AP & Telangana), and sometimes TDS (income tax deducted in advance).
Budget 2026 kept the slabs unchanged, so these rates from last year continue for FY 2026-27 (AY 2027-28):

💡 The magic of 87A
If your taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh, Section 87A wipes out your entire tax (rebate up to ₹60,000). Add the ₹75,000 standard deduction and a fresher earning up to ≈ ₹12.75 lakh salary pays zero income tax in the new regime. (Slight relief also applies just above the limit, so crossing ₹12L by a little doesn't suddenly cost huge tax.)

Proofs for every claim
Simple rule for freshers: if your salary is under ≈ ₹12.75 lakh, the new regime almost always wins — you pay zero tax with zero paperwork. The old regime only makes sense if you have a large combination of rent + 80C + education loan interest + health insurance. Compare both once on the official incometax.gov.in calculator before telling HR.
🗂️ The 4 Tax Tasks Every Fresher Must Do
1
Pick your regime & declare to HR
In your company's HR portal, choose new or old regime and submit the investment declaration. This decides how much TDS is cut each month. You can still switch at ITR filing time.
2
Link PAN with Aadhaar & check Form 26AS / AIS
Your PAN is where all TDS lands. Log in to incometax.gov.in once and check AIS — it shows every rupee of tax deducted against your PAN.
3
Collect Form 16 (June 2027)
Your employer gives Form 16 after the financial year ends — it's the summary of your salary and TDS. You'll need it to file your return.
4
File ITR by 31 July 2027
File ITR-1 (Sahaj) online — it's free and takes under 30 minutes for salaried freshers. Even with zero tax, an ITR helps with visas, credit cards and loans, and gets your TDS refunded.

That's the typical fresher story in the new regime — zero income tax, with only PF and professional tax visible on the payslip. If your payslip still shows TDS, ask HR why, and remember excess TDS comes back as a refund after you file your ITR.
🚫 Common Fresher Tax Mistakes
🤷
Ignoring the HR declaration
Skip it and the employer picks defaults — sometimes cutting more TDS than needed. Your money gets stuck until refund season.
🧾
Fake rent receipts / bills
The IT department cross-checks AIS, PAN of landlords and bank trails. Fake claims = notices, penalties and a scary first year.
🔗
PAN–Aadhaar not linked
An inoperative PAN attracts higher TDS and blocks refunds. Link once on incometax.gov.in and forget it.
⏰
Missing the ITR deadline
Late filing fee up to ₹5,000 plus you lose the option to switch to the old regime for that year. 31 July 2027 — set a reminder now.
💸 Old Regime Savers (Only If You Opt For It)
🏦
Section 80C — ₹1.5 lakh
Your EPF already counts here! Top up with ELSS mutual funds (3-yr lock-in), PPF or life insurance premium.
🏥
Section 80D — ₹25,000
Health insurance premium for yourself (plus more for parents). Worth having regardless of tax.
🏠
HRA exemption
Paying rent in Hyderabad, Vizag or Bengaluru? HRA can cut a big chunk of taxable salary — keep rent receipts and the owner's PAN if rent is high.
🎓
Section 80E — education loan
Repaying a study loan? The entire interest is deductible for up to 8 years — no upper limit.
FY 2026-27 new regime: slabs start at 5% above ₹4L; standard deduction ₹75,000; 87A rebate makes taxable income up to ₹12L tax-free (≈ ₹12.75L salary for salaried).
New regime is the default and best for most freshers; old regime needs big deductions (80C, HRA, 80D, 80E) to win.
EPF counts toward 80C's ₹1.5L limit — old regime only.
TDS is advance tax cut by your employer; excess comes back as refund after filing ITR.
File ITR-1 for FY 2026-27 by 31 July 2027 — even at zero tax it helps with visas, loans and refunds.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free in FY 2026-27?
Under the new regime, resident individuals with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh get a Section 87A rebate of up to ₹60,000, making their tax zero. Salaried people also get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, so salary income up to about ₹12.75 lakh can effectively be tax-free.
Which tax regime is better for freshers?
For most freshers the new regime wins, because fresher salaries are usually below the ₹12.75 lakh effective zero-tax level and freshers rarely have large 80C investments, home loans or high rent to claim under the old regime.
Does EPF count under Section 80C?
Yes. Your own 12% EPF contribution counts towards the ₹1.5 lakh Section 80C limit — but 80C is available only in the old regime.
Why is TDS deducted from a fresher's salary?
Your employer estimates your full-year income and deducts tax monthly (TDS) if the projection crosses the taxable limit. If too much is deducted, you get a refund after filing your ITR.
Do freshers need to file an ITR?
If your income exceeds the basic exemption limit you must file. Even below it, filing is smart — ITRs help with visas, credit cards, loans and claiming TDS refunds. The usual due date for FY 2026-27 is 31 July 2027.
