NDA Exam After 12th: Eligibility, Papers, Marks and the SSB Interview

NDA is the only route into the Army, Navy and Air Force as an officer straight out of Class 12. Two papers worth 900 marks, an SSB worth another 900, and a hard rule most candidates discover too late: you must be unmarried, and Air Force and Navy need Physics and Mathematics.

Quick snapshot

  • NDA and Naval Academy Examination is conducted by UPSC twice a year — NDA I and NDA II — for the Army, Navy and Air Force wings and the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy.
  • Only unmarried male and female candidates are eligible.
  • Army wing: Class 12 pass of the 10+2 pattern in any stream. Air Force, Naval wing and 10+2 Cadet Entry: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
  • Written exam: Mathematics 300 marks and General Ability Test 600 marks, 2½ hours each, objective type, 900 marks total.
  • Negative marking: one third of the marks for that question is deducted for every wrong answer. Blank answers carry no penalty.
  • The SSB interview carries 900 marks — equal to the whole written exam — and runs as a two-stage process over about five days.
  • Training is three years at NDA Khadakwasla with a Jawaharlal Nehru University degree, then one year at IMA Dehradun, INA Ezhimala or the Air Force Academy Hyderabad.
Direct answer

NDA is a UPSC examination open to unmarried Class 12 students and passouts, with a written stage of 900 marks and an SSB interview of 900 marks. The written exam has two objective papers: Mathematics (300 marks, 2½ hours) and the General Ability Test (600 marks, 2½ hours), where the GAT splits into Part A English for 200 marks and Part B General Knowledge for 400 marks. One third of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for a wrong answer.

Eligibility depends on which wing you want. The Army wing of NDA accepts a Class 12 pass of the 10+2 pattern in any stream. The Air Force wing, the Naval wing and the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy require Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The age limit is stated in each notification as a date of birth window, not as an age in years.

1. Who can apply: the four eligibility gates

NDA eligibility is not one rule. It is four separate gates, and failing any one of them makes the rest irrelevant.

Gate 1: You must be unmarried

The UPSC notification is explicit: a candidate must be an unmarried male or female candidate. This is not a formality that gets waived at the SSB. Cadets at NDA and at the service academies are not permitted to marry during training, and a candidate who marries after applying is liable to have the candidature cancelled. If you are planning a marriage, you are planning out of NDA.

Gate 2: The stream requirement, and it is wing-specific

Wing / entryEducational qualification required
Army wing, NDAClass 12 pass of the 10+2 pattern of school education or equivalent, conducted by a State Education Board or a University — any stream
Air Force wing, NDAClass 12 pass with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics of the 10+2 pattern or equivalent
Naval wing, NDAClass 12 pass with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics of the 10+2 pattern or equivalent
10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme, Indian Naval AcademyClass 12 pass with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics of the 10+2 pattern or equivalent

Read that table twice if you are an Arts or Commerce student. You can write NDA and you can be commissioned into the Army. You cannot be commissioned into the Air Force or the Navy through NDA without Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12. This is the single most common eligibility shock among NDA aspirants, and it cannot be fixed at the application stage.

Gate 3: You can apply while still in Class 12

Candidates appearing in the Class 12 examination under the 10+2 pattern may also apply. The notification treats this as a special concession: such candidates must submit proof of passing Class 12 by the date prescribed in that notification, and the notification states plainly that no request to extend that date will be entertained. Practically this means a Class 12 student can attempt NDA in the cycle that falls during their board year — which is why serious aspirants get two or three attempts before they even finish school.

Gate 4: Age — stated as dates, not years

Here is where we will not give you a number in years. The UPSC notification does not state an NDA age limit as "X to Y years". It states a pair of dates: candidates must be born not earlier than one date and not later than another. For the NDA and NA Examination (I), 2026, for instance, the notification specified candidates born not earlier than 1 July 2007 and not later than 1 July 2010.

Use your own cycle's dates, nothing else

That window shifts with every notification, because it is pegged to the commencement date of the course that cycle feeds. Open the UPSC notification for the exact exam you are applying to and read the birth-date window there. Then check it against your Class 10 certificate, because UPSC accepts the date of birth entered in the matriculation or secondary school leaving certificate and will not entertain a subsequent request to change it on any ground.

2. The written exam: two papers, 900 marks

PaperSubjectDurationMaximum marks
Paper I (Code 01)Mathematics2½ hours300
Paper II (Code 02)General Ability Test — Part A English (200) + Part B General Knowledge (400)2½ hours600
Written total900
SSB Test / Interview900

Both papers are objective type only. There is no descriptive writing in the NDA written exam. The Mathematics paper and Part B of the General Ability Test are set bilingually in Hindi and English; Part A, being the English paper itself, is not.

Negative marking

For each question answered wrongly, one third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question is deducted as penalty. If a question is left blank, there is no penalty for it. That ratio matters for strategy: on a paper with four options, a pure guess has a 25% success rate against a one-third penalty, which is a losing bet. Eliminate two options before you commit, or leave it.

What the General Ability Test actually tests

The General Knowledge section of Part B is the reason science students cannot coast through this paper. UPSC publishes the weightage. Questions on the six sections carry approximately the following share of Part B's 400 marks:

Part B weightage (approximate)

  • Physics — 25%
  • Chemistry — 15%
  • General Science — 10%
  • Social Studies (History and the Freedom Movement) — 20%
  • Geography — 20%
  • Current Events — 10%

What that means for you

  • Physics is the largest single block in the GK section, on top of the Mathematics paper. Science students have a real structural advantage here
  • History plus Geography together are 40% of Part B — the biggest combined chunk, and the one Science students usually neglect
  • Part A English alone is 200 marks, more than two thirds of the entire Mathematics paper
  • Current events are only 10%, so do not spend half your day on newspapers

UPSC also fixes minimum qualifying marks at its discretion each cycle, and these are applied to the individual papers as well as the aggregate. In other words, a very high Mathematics score cannot rescue a GAT score that falls below the sectional minimum. Read the relevant paragraph of your notification; the numbers themselves are not published in advance.

The application fee for NDA is ₹100, and candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and all female candidates are exempted from paying it. Verify this against your own notification, as fee provisions are restated each cycle.

3. The SSB: a two-stage process over about five days

Candidates who obtain the minimum qualifying marks in the written examination are called by the Services Selection Board. The SSB carries 900 marks — exactly as much as the entire written exam — and it is where most written-qualified candidates are screened out. It runs as a two-stage selection process.

1

Stage I — screening, on the first day of reporting

Every candidate is put through Stage I on the first day. It comprises the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests and the Picture Perception and Description Test (PP&DT). Shortlisting is on a combination of OIR and PP&DT performance. Only those who qualify go on to Stage II; the rest are returned the same day.

2

Stage II — the real assessment, over four days

Stage II comprises the Psychology tests, the Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks, the Personal Interview and the Conference, conducted over four days. Three independent assessors — the psychologist, the GTO and the interviewing officer — assess you separately.

3

The Conference

On the final day the board sits together and the assessors' independent findings are reconciled. The recommendation is a board decision, not any one officer's call.

4

Medical board

Recommended candidates go to a medical board. Only candidates declared fit by the medical authorities enter the final merit consideration.

What is inside Stage II

  • Psychology tests. Written projective tests, administered in a tight time frame, plus a self-description. They are deliberately time-pressured so that you respond instinctively rather than strategically. Rehearsed answers are what the psychologist is trained to spot.
  • GTO tasks. Outdoor and indoor group tasks — group discussion, group planning, the progressive group task, the half group task, lecturette, individual obstacles, command task and the final group task. These assess you inside a group, which is what officer selection is actually about.
  • Personal interview. One-to-one with an interviewing officer, built largely on the Personal Information Questionnaire you fill in on arrival. Your own form is the question bank.

The honest truth about SSB preparation

The SSB is not a knowledge test and it cannot be crammed. It is an assessment of officer-like qualities carried out independently by three assessors who then compare notes. Memorised psychology responses, borrowed group-discussion lines and a coached interview story produce exactly the inconsistency the Conference is designed to catch.

What genuinely helps: being able to speak clearly about your own life, having actually done something outside academics, basic physical fitness for the obstacles, and complete honesty in your Personal Information Questionnaire — because every claim in it is fair game in the interview.

4. Merit list, training and what you become

The final merit list is drawn from the written marks and the SSB marks together, with 900 marks on each side. UPSC recommends candidates against the vacancies reported for each wing by the Services, subject to medical fitness, and the course allotment follows the preference you gave and your position on the list.

StageWhereDurationOutcome
NDANational Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, PuneThree years, six termsBachelor's degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University
Army cadetsIndian Military Academy, DehradunOne yearCommissioned as an officer in the Indian Army
Naval cadetsIndian Naval Academy, EzhimalaOne yearCommissioned as an officer in the Indian Navy
Air Force cadetsAir Force Academy, HyderabadOne yearCommissioned as an officer in the Indian Air Force

The NDA curriculum across the three years is divided between physical training, service subjects and academics, and the service you were allotted when you joined NDA determines which academy you proceed to. The degree from JNU is a real, recognised graduate degree — which is worth knowing, because it means an NDA cadet who is invalidated out for medical reasons is not left without a qualification.

5. How to prepare, in the order that works

1

Finish your Class 11 and 12 Mathematics properly

The Mathematics paper is 300 marks of 10+2 level material. Your own NCERT or state board textbook is the syllabus. Do not start with a question bank; start with the chapters.

2

Treat English as a 200-mark paper, because it is

Grammar, usage, vocabulary and comprehension. This is the cheapest scoring block in NDA and the one most aspirants ignore while grinding at Mathematics.

3

Attack GK by weightage, not by interest

Physics 25%, History and Geography 20% each, Chemistry 15%, General Science 10%, Current Events 10%. Build your study time in that ratio.

4

Solve UPSC's own previous question papers

UPSC publishes previous year question papers on upsc.gov.in. They are free, they are authentic, and they are a better guide to difficulty level than any guidebook.

5

Build fitness and speech from day one

Running, basic strength work and the confidence to speak in a group are SSB currency. They take months, not weeks, and they cannot be started after the written result.

NDA compared with the other defence routes

NDA is the earliest officer entry, but it is not the only one. CDS, also conducted by UPSC, is the graduate-level route into IMA, INA, the Air Force Academy and the Officers Training Academy. The Agnipath route enrols Agniveers as soldiers, sailors and airmen rather than officers, with Class 8, 10 or 12 eligibility depending on category. If you are in Class 12 now and want to be a commissioned officer, NDA is the fastest road; if you miss the age window, CDS after graduation is the standing alternative.

Frequently asked questions

What is the eligibility for the NDA exam after 12th?

You must be an unmarried male or female candidate. For the Army wing of NDA, a Class 12 pass of the 10+2 pattern in any stream is enough. For the Air Force wing, the Naval wing and the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy, you need Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Candidates still appearing in Class 12 may apply, subject to submitting proof of passing by the date prescribed in that notification.

Can a married candidate write the NDA exam?

No. The UPSC notification requires candidates to be unmarried male or female candidates. Cadets are not permitted to marry during training, and a candidate who marries after applying risks cancellation of candidature. This condition is checked and it is not relaxed at the SSB or at the medical board.

Can an Arts or Commerce student join the Air Force through NDA?

No. The Air Force wing, the Naval wing and the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme all require Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. An Arts or Commerce student without those subjects can still write NDA and be commissioned into the Army wing, but cannot be considered for the Air Force or Naval wings. If flying is the goal, the subject combination has to be fixed in Class 11, not later.

What is the NDA exam pattern and marking scheme?

Two objective papers. Mathematics carries 300 marks over 2 and a half hours. The General Ability Test carries 600 marks over 2 and a half hours, split into Part A English for 200 marks and Part B General Knowledge for 400 marks. The written total is 900 marks and the SSB interview carries a further 900 marks. One third of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for each wrong answer, and there is no penalty for a question left blank.

What is the age limit for NDA?

The notification does not state an age in years. It states a date of birth window: candidates must be born not earlier than one specified date and not later than another. For the NDA and NA Examination (I), 2026, the window was candidates born not earlier than 1 July 2007 and not later than 1 July 2010. The window shifts with every notification because it is pegged to the course commencement date, so read it in the notification for the exam you are applying to.

How many days is the SSB interview for NDA?

It is a two-stage process spanning roughly five days. Stage I is conducted on the first day of reporting and comprises the Officer Intelligence Rating tests and the Picture Perception and Description Test; candidates are shortlisted on a combination of the two. Stage II comprises the Psychology tests, the Group Testing Officer tasks, the Personal Interview and the Conference, conducted over four days. Candidates who fail Stage I are returned the same day.

Do NDA cadets get a degree?

Yes. The NDA course runs for three years across six terms at Khadakwasla and a cadet is awarded a Bachelor's degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University on completion. After that, cadets proceed for about a year to the Indian Military Academy at Dehradun, the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala or the Air Force Academy at Hyderabad, according to the service allotted at the time of joining NDA, before being commissioned as officers.

Is there negative marking in NDA, and how should I handle guessing?

Yes. One third of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for a wrong answer, while an unanswered question carries no penalty. On a four-option question, a blind guess succeeds one time in four against a one-third penalty, which is a losing proposition over a full paper. Attempt a question only when you can eliminate at least two options, and leave the rest blank.

The date of birth window, the number of vacancies, the examination dates, the minimum qualifying marks and the fee are fixed afresh in every UPSC notification and must be read there before you apply. Minimum qualifying marks are set by the Commission at its discretion and are not published in advance. Detailed medical standards, including vision and physical requirements, are set out in the appendix to each notification; we have not reproduced them as numbers here because they differ by wing.
