ARMY ENTRY 2026
Agniveer Army Recruitment: Categories, Eligibility, CEE and Rally Explained

Agniveer entry into the Indian Army is now a three-stage process — an online Common Entrance Exam first, then the Recruitment Rally with the physical test, then the medical. Here is each category, what it needs, and how registration on joinindianarmy.nic.in actually works.

Quick snapshot

  • Agniveer entries are open in five main streams: General Duty, Technical, Clerk/Store Keeper Technical, Tradesman (10th pass) and Tradesman (8th pass), plus Agniveer General Duty (Women Military Police).
  • The age band for Agniveer on the official eligibility page is 17½ to 21 years. The exact birth-date window is fixed afresh in each recruiting year's notification.
  • The order is fixed: Online CEE → Recruitment Rally (physical and measurement tests) → Medical Examination. You cannot skip to the rally.
  • Registration and the whole application happen on joinindianarmy.nic.in only. There is no offline form and no agent.
  • The rally physical test is built around the 1.6 km run, pull-ups, the 9-feet ditch and the zig-zag balance.
  • Agnipath is a four-year engagement, with up to 25% of each batch enrolled into the regular cadre afterwards on merit and organisational need.
  • Agniveers get a one-time Seva Nidhi package at the end of four years, but no gratuity and no pension.
Direct answer

Agniveer recruitment into the Indian Army runs in three stages. You register on joinindianarmy.nic.in and sit a computer-based Online Common Entrance Exam (CEE). If you are shortlisted on CEE merit, you are called to a Recruitment Rally run by your Army Recruiting Office, where you do the Physical Fitness Test and Physical Measurement Test and your documents are checked. Candidates who clear the rally go to a Medical Examination, and the final merit list is drawn from the whole process.

Eligibility is set per category. Agniveer General Duty needs Class 10 with 45% in aggregate and 33% in each subject. Agniveer Technical needs 10+2 in Science with Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English at 50% aggregate and 40% in each subject. Agniveer Clerk/SKT needs 10+2 in any stream at 60% aggregate with 50% in each subject. Tradesman entries are 10th simple pass or 8th simple pass. The age band on the official page is 17½ to 21 years.

1. The Agniveer entry categories and what each one needs

Agniveer is not one exam with one cut-off. It is a set of entries, each with its own education bar, its own question paper and its own vacancy pool. Choosing the wrong category is the single most common self-inflicted rejection, because your marksheet decides which entries you are even allowed to apply for.

These are the education requirements as published on the Agniveer eligibility criteria page of joinindianarmy.nic.in:

Agniveer categoryEducation requiredAge band on official page
Agniveer (General Duty) (All Arms)Class 10 / Matric with 45% in aggregate and 33% in each subject17½ – 21 years
Agniveer (Technical)10+2 / Intermediate in Science with Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English, min 50% aggregate and 40% in each subject. Alternatively, 10+2 Science with PCM and English from a recognised board (including NIOS) plus a one-year ITI course in the required field at NSQF level 4 or above17½ – 21 years
Agniveer (Clerk / Store Keeper Technical)10+2 in any stream (Arts, Commerce, Science) with 60% in aggregate and minimum 50% in each subject. 50% in English and in Maths or Accounts or Book Keeping in Class XII is mandatory17½ – 21 years
Agniveer (Tradesman) – 10th passClass 10 simple pass, no aggregate stipulation, but 33% in each subject17½ – 21 years
Agniveer (Tradesman) – 8th passClass 8 simple pass, no aggregate stipulation, but 33% in each subject17½ – 21 years
Agniveer (GD) Women Military PoliceClass 10 / Matric with 45% in aggregate and 33% in each subject, with separate physical standards17½ – 21 years

Three points that decide a lot of applications:

  • Clerk/SKT is the strictest on marks. 60% aggregate plus 50% in every subject, and a specific 50% floor in English and in Maths/Accounts/Book Keeping. A 58% Commerce student is not eligible, however good the rest of the profile is.
  • Technical has an ITI route. If your PCM aggregate is short of 50%, a one-year ITI course in the required field at NSQF level 4 or above is an alternative path into Agniveer Technical. Check the trade list in the notification first.
  • Grading boards are covered. Where a board awards grades instead of percentages, the official page sets out the equivalence — a D grade in individual subjects read against the 33% requirement, and an overall C2 grade or equivalent read against the 45% aggregate for General Duty.

The Army also runs a related Technical (Aviation & Ammunition Examiner) entry, which carries a wider upper age limit on the same official page. Read the category list in your recruiting year's notification rather than assuming all entries share one age band.

2. Age: the band, and the number only the notification can give you

The official Agniveer eligibility page states the age band as 17½ to 21 years for the main entries. What it does not and cannot give you is the pair of dates that apply to your cycle.

Every recruiting year's Agniveer notification converts that band into a hard date of birth window — born on or after one date and on or before another. Those two dates shift with each cycle. We are deliberately not printing a birth-date window here, because a window copied from last year's notification is exactly how candidates get rejected at document verification after clearing the run.

Do this before anything else

Open the current Agniveer notification on joinindianarmy.nic.in and find the date of birth window for your category. Check it against your Class 10 certificate, not your Aadhaar and not your school admission register. The matriculation certificate is the document the Army goes by for date of birth. If the date on your 10th certificate is wrong, get it corrected through your board before you apply — that process takes months and cannot be done at the rally.

3. Stage one: the Online Common Entrance Exam

Until 2022 the rally came first and the written exam second. That is reversed now. The Army introduced a computer-based Online Common Entrance Exam as the first step, so the rally is no longer open to everyone who shows up — only CEE-shortlisted candidates are called.

What is fixed about the CEE:

  • It is a computer-based test, taken at an allotted exam centre, after online registration on joinindianarmy.nic.in.
  • There is a separate paper for each Agniveer category. General Duty, Technical, Clerk/SKT and Tradesman do not sit the same paper.
  • An examination fee is payable for the Online CEE. For the 2026-27 recruiting year, the Ministry of Defence announcement stated a fee of ₹250 for appearing in the Online CEE. Confirm the current amount on the notification before you pay, because fees are restated each cycle.
  • Bonus marks are available for certain additional qualifications, as specified in the notification for that year.

What we are not stating: the exact number of questions, the mark allocation per section and whether negative marking applies in your cycle. Those are set out in the current notification and the category-wise exam pattern on the official site, and they have been revised between cycles. Read them there.

How to prepare for the CEE

For General Duty the paper is built on General Knowledge, General Science, elementary Mathematics and reasoning at Class 10 level. For Technical it moves up to 10+2 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. For Clerk/SKT the English and Maths or accounts component carries real weight, which matches the eligibility rule demanding 50% in those subjects in Class XII. Use your own NCERT or state board textbooks, build a daily current affairs habit, and practise on a computer screen rather than on paper — this is a CBT and screen speed is a skill of its own.

4. Stage two: the Recruitment Rally

Candidates shortlisted on CEE merit get an admit card for a Recruitment Rally conducted by the Army Recruiting Office (ARO) responsible for their district. The rally is where the physical filtering happens, and it happens fast — usually in the early hours of the morning.

1

Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

The 1.6 km run first, then pull-ups on the beam, the 9-feet ditch and the zig-zag balance. The run and pull-ups are scored; the ditch and balance are assessed as qualify or fail.

2

Physical Measurement Test (PMT)

Height, weight and chest measurement against the standard laid down for your category and your region. These standards are not uniform across India and are not uniform across entries.

3

Document verification

Originals are checked against what you declared online — education certificates, domicile, caste certificate where claimed, and the character certificate. A mismatch here ends the candidature.

4

Onward to medical

Candidates who clear PFT, PMT and documents are sent for the Medical Examination the same day or on the date the ARO announces.

How the physical test is scored

EventHow it is treatedMaximum marks
1.6 km runMarked in time groups — the faster your group, the higher your score. Beyond the last qualifying band you are out60
Pull-ups (beam)Marked by number completed, on a sliding scale from the minimum count upwards40
9-feet ditchQualify or fail. No marks awarded—
Zig-zag balanceQualify or fail. No marks awarded—

We are not printing the run timing bands or the pull-up counts against each score. The Physical Fitness Test page on joinindianarmy.nic.in carries the current table and the bands have been revised between cycles. Train to that table and to the one in your rally notification — not to a number from a coaching sheet.

The practical reading is simple: the run is the biggest single scoring event, and pull-ups are the biggest controllable one. Run timing improves slowly over months; pull-ups improve quickly with a structured routine, and most candidates leave marks on the beam because they never trained grip and back strength at all.

5. Stage three: the medical examination

The medical is conducted by military medical officers at the rally site or a designated military hospital. It is a full examination, not a formality, and it is the stage at which candidates who sailed through the run are most often sent home.

  • Candidates are graded fit, temporarily unfit or permanently unfit. Temporarily unfit means a correctable condition with a review period — you are given time and re-examined.
  • Common reasons for being held back are dental problems, varicocele, hydrocele, piles, knock knees, flat feet, hearing and vision deficiencies, skin conditions and tattoos in non-permitted locations.
  • A candidate declared unfit can seek a specialist review or appeal through the procedure the medical board explains in writing. Do not leave the ground without that written intimation.
  • The precise standards for vision, hearing, dental and anthropometric fitness are laid down in the Army's medical policy and reproduced in the notification. We are not summarising them as numbers here, because they are category-specific.

If you have a correctable condition, get it treated before the rally, not after a temporarily-unfit grading. The review clock is short.

6. The four-year engagement, retention and Seva Nidhi

Agnipath was cleared by the Union Cabinet in June 2022 as a new model for enrolment of soldiers, sailors and airmen. Its terms matter more than the exam, because they define what the job actually is.

What the scheme gives

  • A four-year engagement in the Armed Forces; those enrolled are called Agniveers
  • Up to 25% of each specific batch may be enrolled into the regular cadre after the four years, based on performance and organisational requirement
  • A one-time Seva Nidhi package at the end of four years: your own contribution plus accrued interest, plus a matching government contribution with interest
  • Seva Nidhi is exempt from income tax
  • A non-contributory life insurance cover for the duration of the engagement
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs has reserved 10% of vacancies in the CAPFs and Assam Rifles for Agniveers who complete four years

What it does not give

  • No gratuity and no pensionary benefits for the four-year engagement
  • No guarantee of retention. The 25% is a ceiling, not an entitlement, and selection into the regular cadre is on merit and need
  • Retention into the regular cadre is on fresh terms and conditions, not a continuation of the Agniveer terms
  • No right to choose your arm, service or posting

On the money: the June 2022 Cabinet decision press release described the Seva Nidhi package as working out to approximately ₹11.71 lakh, and a non-contributory life insurance cover of ₹48 lakh for the engagement period. We are deliberately not printing a monthly in-hand package or a year-by-year salary table. The customised monthly package and the deduction into the Agniveer Corpus Fund are governed by the scheme's own terms, they are restated in the enrolment documents, and a figure lifted from a coaching site is worthless. Ask the ARO or read the scheme document on the Ministry of Defence and Join Indian Army sites.

7. How to register on joinindianarmy.nic.in

1

Create your account on the official portal

Go to joinindianarmy.nic.in and open the JCO/OR (Agniveer) registration. Register with your own mobile number and email, because every subsequent message — admit card, rally call-up, result — goes there.

2

Enter your details exactly as on your certificates

Name, father's name and date of birth must match your matriculation certificate character for character. Many candidates lose their candidature at document verification purely on a spelling mismatch.

3

Pick the right category and your ARO

Select the Agniveer category you are actually eligible for. The portal maps you to the Army Recruiting Office for your district; check that it is correct, because your rally location follows from it.

4

Upload documents and pay the CEE fee

Upload scans in the formats the portal specifies, then pay the examination fee online. Save the payment receipt and the application number.

5

Download the admit card and sit the CEE

The admit card carries your exam centre and reporting time. Carry it with a photo ID in original.

6

Watch the portal for the rally call-up

CEE shortlisting results and rally admit cards are published on the same portal. Nobody will phone you. Nobody legitimate will ask you for money to arrange a call-up.

8. Mistakes that end Agniveer candidatures

Five avoidable failures

  • Applying for a category you are not eligible for. Clerk/SKT at 55% aggregate, Technical without English in Class XII, General Duty with 40% aggregate — the portal may accept the application, but document verification will not.
  • Using last year's dates. The birth-date window, fee and exam pattern are restated every recruiting year.
  • Training only for the run. Pull-ups carry substantial marks and the ditch and balance can fail you outright no matter how fast you ran.
  • Paying a middleman. Agniveer selection runs entirely through the portal, the CEE, the rally and the medical. Any offer of a guaranteed seat is a fraud and engaging with it can get you debarred.
  • Treating it as a backup. Agnipath is a four-year engagement with no pension and a capped retention route. Enter it because you want to serve, with a plan for year five either way.

Frequently asked questions

What is the age limit for Agniveer in the Indian Army?

The Agniveer eligibility criteria page on joinindianarmy.nic.in states the age band as 17 and a half to 21 years for the main entries. The band is converted into a specific date of birth window in each recruiting year's notification, and that window changes every cycle. Check the current notification and verify it against the date of birth on your matriculation certificate, which is the document the Army treats as authoritative.

What qualification do I need for Agniveer General Duty?

Class 10 or Matric with 45% marks in aggregate and 33% in each subject. Where your board awards grades instead of percentages, the official page sets out the grade equivalence, including an overall aggregate in C2 grade or equivalent read against the 45% requirement. Agniveer Tradesman entries are easier on marks: a simple pass in Class 10 or Class 8 with 33% in each subject and no aggregate stipulation.

Which Agniveer category has the toughest marks requirement?

Agniveer Clerk / Store Keeper Technical. It needs 10+2 in any stream with 60% in aggregate and a minimum of 50% in each subject, and separately requires 50% in English and in Maths or Accounts or Book Keeping in Class XII. Agniveer Technical needs 10+2 in Science with Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English at 50% aggregate and 40% in each subject, with an alternative route through a one-year ITI course at NSQF level 4 or above.

Is the Agniveer written exam before or after the rally?

Before. The Army moved to a computer-based Online Common Entrance Exam as the first stage of recruitment. You register on joinindianarmy.nic.in, sit the CEE, and only CEE-shortlisted candidates are called to the Recruitment Rally for the Physical Fitness Test and Physical Measurement Test. The medical examination is the third stage. You cannot walk into a rally without having cleared the CEE shortlist.

What does the Agniveer physical fitness test involve?

A 1.6 km run, pull-ups on the beam, a 9-feet ditch and a zig-zag balance. The run carries 60 marks, scored in time groups, and pull-ups carry 40 marks, scored by the number completed. The 9-feet ditch and the zig-zag balance are qualify or fail with no marks awarded. The exact timing bands and pull-up counts against each score are on the Physical Fitness Test page of joinindianarmy.nic.in and in your rally notification, and they have been revised between cycles.

What happens after the four-year Agniveer engagement?

Up to 25% of each specific batch may be enrolled into the regular cadre of the Armed Forces, based on performance during the engagement and organisational requirements, on fresh terms and conditions. The rest are released with a one-time Seva Nidhi package. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also reserved 10% of vacancies in the Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Rifles for Agniveers who complete four years.

Do Agniveers get a pension?

No. Under the Agnipath scheme there is no entitlement to gratuity or pensionary benefits for the four-year engagement. What an Agniveer receives at the end of four years is the one-time Seva Nidhi package, made up of the Agniveer's own contribution with accrued interest and a matching government contribution with interest, and it is exempt from income tax. A non-contributory life insurance cover applies for the duration of the engagement.

How do I apply for Agniveer recruitment?

Only online at joinindianarmy.nic.in. Register with your own mobile number and email, enter your name and date of birth exactly as on your matriculation certificate, select the Agniveer category you are eligible for, confirm the Army Recruiting Office mapped to your district, upload the required documents and pay the examination fee online. There is no offline form. Any agent promising a guaranteed selection is running a fraud and dealing with one can get you debarred.

Note: This guide explains the Agniveer entry structure and the Agnipath scheme in general terms, using the eligibility criteria published on joinindianarmy.nic.in and Press Information Bureau releases of the Ministry of Defence. Age windows, examination fees, vacancy numbers, physical standards, physical test timing bands and the exam pattern are fixed afresh in each recruiting year's notification and must be read there before you apply. We have deliberately omitted the monthly Agniveer package and the physical measurement standards rather than print figures that change by cycle, category and region. Always act on the current notification on joinindianarmy.nic.in.
