Aptitude Tests, Decoded: What Placement Exams Actually Test and the Free 45-Day Plan That Covers It

Almost every fresher job — IT services, GCC, banking, operations — begins with the same gate: an aptitude test. And most students prepare for it backwards: months on hard quant tricks, zero minutes on speed, accuracy discipline and the verbal section. This page fixes the order.

❗The problem this page is trying to fix
The aptitude round eliminates more freshers than every interview round combined — and it eliminates many who “prepared”. Why? Because preparation usually means passively watching solution videos and grinding the hardest topics, while the test is actually won on easy and medium questions answered fast, accurately, under time pressure.

Add two silent killers: the verbal section, which most engineering students never practise at all, and negative-marking discipline, which nobody teaches. A student who knows everything but attempts recklessly scores below one who knows less and manages the paper well.

Below: what these tests consistently cover, the error patterns that fail prepared students, and a 45-day free plan built around timed practice rather than video-watching.
🔍What aptitude tests actually are
The purpose
A speed-and-accuracy filter, not a maths olympiad. Companies use it to cut thousands of applicants to hundreds — the bar is consistent competence under time, not brilliance.
The three pillars
Quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, verbal ability — in nearly every company’s gate. Some add a coding or domain section; the three pillars stay.
The real difficulty
Mostly school-level maths and pattern logic. The difficulty is the clock. A question you can solve in three minutes that must be solved in sixty seconds is the actual exam.
Where students lose
Reckless attempts (accuracy collapse), time sunk into one stubborn question, ignored verbal sections, and zero full-length timed mocks before the real test.
Platform variety
Different companies use different test vendors and patterns, and patterns change by cycle — current company-wise patterns are not published in our source. The pillars below are the stable core.
What preparation means
Timed solving, error logging and mock discipline. Watching solutions feels like progress and transfers almost nothing to the clock.
📋The syllabus that repeats everywhere
Master these lists and you are prepared for the overwhelming majority of fresher gates — company-specific extras sit on top of this core.

✨The mistakes that fail prepared students
Grinding hard topics, skipping easy-question speed. Tests are won on the easy 60–70% answered fast and clean. Speed on basics is worth more marks than mastery of the hardest chapter.
Ignoring verbal entirely. For most engineering students the verbal section is the lowest-effort, highest-return area — twenty minutes daily moves it within weeks, and sectional cutoffs make it unskippable.
No negative-marking discipline. Where negative marking exists, a guessing habit quietly destroys a good paper. The rule must be practised in mocks, not invented in the hall: attempt sure and workable; skip pure guesses.
First full mock on exam day. Stamina, panic management and section-time budgeting only come from full-length timed mocks. Doing your first one in the real test is doing it one test too late.
No error log. Without a written log of every mock mistake and its cause (concept? speed? careless?), the same errors repeat forever. The log, reviewed weekly, is where scores actually move.
🎓The free 45-day plan
Nothing below needs a paid course. It needs a timer, free question banks, and honesty with your error log.
Days 1–3: take one full-length free mock cold, timed. Score it. This baseline — not a feeling — tells you where the 45 days must go.
Days 4–24 (phase 1): one quant topic + one reasoning topic per two days, each ending with a timed 15-question set. Plus 20 minutes of verbal daily — one comprehension passage and ten grammar items.
Days 25–40 (phase 2): alternate days: full timed sectionals one day, review + error log the next. Log every miss with its cause: concept, speed, or careless.
Days 41–45 (phase 3): one full mock daily, same time of day as your real slot, with strict attempt rules. Review for two hours after each.
Rebuild speed maths by hand: tables to 20, squares to 30, common fraction→percentage conversions. Five minutes daily; it compounds into every quant question.
If a company publishes its own pattern (TCS NQT does — our syllabus guide is below), mirror your final mocks to that exact pattern.
🗺Paper strategy for the day itself
1
Budget time per section before entering
Know the section timings and set internal checkpoints. The paper manages students who do not manage it.
2
Three-pass attempt order
Pass 1: everything instantly solvable. Pass 2: workable with effort. Pass 3: remaining time on the hard ones. No question gets three minutes of stubbornness on pass 1.
3
Fix your guess rule in advance
With negative marking: attempt only sure + workable, skip blind guesses. Without it: attempt everything in the last minutes. Decide by the rules announced, not by hall panic.
4
Protect accuracy when tired
The last twenty minutes produce the most careless errors. Slow down ten percent late in the paper; a careless wrong with negative marking costs double.
5
Treat each attempt as data
Many companies allow reattempts in later cycles, and every test teaches the next one — log what happened within a day while memory is fresh. Placement season is a series, not one final.

⚠️ What this page deliberately does NOT tell you
No company-wise current patterns. Test vendors, section counts and negative-marking rules change by cycle; current per-company patterns are not published in our source. Where a company publishes its own (TCS NQT), we cover it on its own page, linked below.
No cutoff claims. Cutoffs vary by company, batch and cycle and are rarely disclosed officially. Anyone quoting exact cutoffs is guessing.
No paid test-series endorsements. Free question banks and mocks are sufficient for this syllabus; pay only if you have exhausted free material and know the specific gap you are buying for.
No shortcut-trick inflation. A handful of speed techniques help; the hundreds sold as “magic tricks” mostly cost more memory than they save in seconds. Timed practice is the trick.
💬Frequently Asked Questions
How long does aptitude preparation really take?
For a student starting from school-level comfort with maths, 45 focused days of timed practice is a realistic core — the plan above. Starting from genuine weakness in basics, add 3–4 weeks of foundation work first. Months of passive video-watching, by contrast, move almost nothing.
Which section should I prepare first?
Start all three in parallel but weight by your baseline mock: most engineering students need the most new work in verbal and the most speed work in quant. Reasoning tends to improve fastest with pure practice volume.
Do I need a paid course or test series?
Usually no. The syllabus is stable and free question banks and mocks cover it. A paid series is defensible only for company-specific mock formats after free material is exhausted — and never as a substitute for your own timed solving and error log.
How do I stop running out of time?
Three fixes: speed maths drills (tables, squares, percentage conversions) daily; the three-pass attempt order so no question eats three minutes early; and sectional timed practice until the checkpoint rhythm is automatic. Time trouble is a trained-away problem, not a talent problem.
What about negative marking — attempt everything or play safe?
Depends entirely on the announced rules. With negative marking: attempt sure and workable questions, skip blind guesses — and practise that discipline in mocks until it holds under pressure. Without negative marking: never leave anything blank at the end.
My aptitude is fine but I still fail. What else is being tested?
Check three quieter failure points: sectional cutoffs (a brilliant quant score cannot rescue a failed verbal section), accuracy rate (high attempts with low accuracy reads badly on vendor scorecards), and the written communication items some tests include. Our placement-failure breakdown below goes deeper.
