Visakhapatnam’s maritime history stretches far back. In ancient times, it boasted extensive trade links with the Middle East and Rome. Cargo was loaded onto ships anchored offshore using small boats. Fast forward to the 12th century, and Visakhapatnam had already transformed into a fortified trading town. The East India Company even set up a branch here in 1682, solidifying its importance.

The 19th century witnessed a boom in trade. Remarkably, goods worth Rs. 83 lakh passed through Vizagapatam/Bhimunipatnam in 1882-83. The principal commodities traded at this anchorage port included muslin cloth from Uppada, manganese ore exported to Britain and the US, oilseeds, jaggery, jute, indigo, and hides and skins. Furthermore, extensive trade relations existed with Burma.

The modern harbor, a marvel of engineering, was built between 1927 and 1933 by the Bengal Nagpur Railway. This landlocked inner harbor provided a crucial sea outlet for manganese ore from central India, significantly boosting trade efficiency.

Visakhapatnam’s strategic location played a vital role in its development as a port. Protected from cyclones by the high promontory known as Dolphin’s Nose Hill, it offered a safe harbor. Vessels of the British India Steam Navigation Company were frequent visitors. In fact, British survey party reports starting in 1858 emphasized the need for a port in this region. Following World War I (1914-18), Col. H. Cartwright Reid of the British Admiralty proposed constructing a harbor at the mouth of River Meghadri Gedda, which the government subsequently approved. The harbor’s unique feature is the island breakwater, constructed by scuttling two old ships, JANUS and WELLESDON, which form the skeleton around which a rubble mound was formed.
